Nyika National Park is Malawi's largest at roughly 3,200 km², occupying a plateau in the far north that rises above 2,500 metres. The landscape is open rolling grassland with pockets of forest — high, cool, and unlike anywhere else in the country.
More than 200 orchid species have been recorded, described as the richest concentration in south-central Africa and at their best in the rainy season, alongside over 400 bird species. Antelope from duiker to roan and eland are common, and the park is said to hold one of the highest leopard densities in central Africa, though sightings are another matter.
The honest answer on whether it is worth it: yes, if you have three weeks or are already travelling in the north. No, if you are on a two-week southern circuit. The distance is the whole decision, and no amount of enthusiasm about the landscape changes the map.

What makes it different
Nyika does not look like the rest of Malawi and does not look like most of Africa. It is high open grassland, cool and often misty, with rolling hills and pockets of evergreen forest in the valleys. Visitors routinely reach for comparisons to upland Britain, and the comparison is fair.
The wildlife follows the landscape. Antelope are the headline — roan and eland in numbers, with zebra and bushbuck. Elephant and buffalo generally stay at lower elevations. Leopard are present in real density but the grass is long and the park is vast.
For birders and anyone interested in plants, this is the strongest destination in Malawi. The orchid concentration is exceptional and the rainy season is when to see it, which sits awkwardly against the dry season being easier for travel.

Activities suit the terrain
Walking is the natural way to experience Nyika, and the open grassland makes it feel safe and expansive in a way most African parks do not. Mountain biking and 4x4 exploration are both established here, and there are waterfalls, trout pools and neolithic rock shelters across the plateau.
This is not a place for a classic game drive. It is a place to be outside in.

The distance question
Nyika is in the far north. From Lilongwe it is a long day's drive, and from the southern circuit it is not a detour but a different trip. Chelinda, the accommodation area in the centre of the plateau, adds more driving once you are in the park.
That is why our recommendation depends entirely on itinerary length. On three weeks or more, or on a route already going north via Nkhata Bay and the northern lake, Nyika is one of the best things in Malawi. On fourteen days with Liwonde and the lake already booked, it does not fit and forcing it ruins the rest.
It pairs sensibly with the northern lakeshore, Livingstonia and Vwaza. It does not pair sensibly with Mulanje or Majete, which are at the other end of the country.

- Trips of three weeks or more, or routes already heading north
- Birders, and anyone who cares about orchids or montane flora
- Walkers who want open country rather than a vehicle

- You have two weeks and a southern circuit — the map will not bend
- You want conventional big-game viewing
- You are unwilling to spend two long days driving for one destination

What it costs
We do not publish Nyika accommodation rates. Some currently available published pricing for the area is explicitly marked 2019, and presenting it as current would be misleading. Rates are confirmed with the operator before we quote anything.

Nyika is the best example in Malawi of a destination that is genuinely excellent and genuinely wrong for most itineraries. We turn people away from it more often than we recommend it, and that is not reluctance — it is the map.
If you do have three weeks, put Nyika in and take something else out. It is more distinctive than a second safari park and it is the part of a northern trip people remember.
