Current published hire rates run from US$75 to US$145 per vehicle per day, and the difference is the vehicle, not the operator. Each class includes 200 km a day; beyond that you pay per kilometre, at a rate that also rises with the class.
That last line is where Malawi budgets break. Lilongwe to Liwonde and back clears the daily allowance on its own, so the cheap vehicle on a long route is not always the cheap route.
What each class actually buys

Suzuki Jimny class
Two people on tar and good gravel. Cape Maclear, Zomba, the main lake road. It will reach most places a first Malawi route goes.
Tight for four adults with luggage, and underpowered on the rougher reserve tracks after rain.

Hilux / Ranger class
The honest default for a mixed route with reserve tracks in it. Ground clearance and load space without the top-class rate.
More vehicle than a lake-and-city itinerary needs.

Land Cruiser 76 / Prado class
Four adults with real luggage, long distances, or a route with sustained rough track — Nyika in particular.
The highest rate and the highest excess-kilometre charge. On a short lake route it is money spent on capability you will not use.

The line people miss
Every class here includes 200 km per day. Excess kilometres are charged at US$0.38–US$0.73 depending on the vehicle — US$70 on the mini 4x4, rising to US$130 on the large one. The allowance pools across the rental in most cases, but a route built on long single hops will still overrun it.
Malawi's distances make this line matter. Lilongwe to Liwonde and back in a day clears the 200 km allowance on its own.
Where these figures come from
These are rates published by the rental operator, read directly from its own pages and last checked in September 2026. They are not NYASA sell prices and they are not quotes: a current rate is confirmed with the operator before anything is arranged. Published rates move, and a vehicle class can be unavailable on your dates at any price.
