Likoma Island is a small piece of Malawian territory lying in Mozambican waters off the eastern shore of Lake Malawi, retained by Malawi because of its history in the campaign against the slave trade. It holds St Peter's Cathedral, built from 1903 and comparable in size to Winchester Cathedral, with stained glass and carved soapstone.
It is reached by air or by boat, and access is the defining planning constraint. Whichever way you come, build buffer days at both ends — Likoma is not a place to arrive the day before an international flight.
Allow three nights minimum, and four is better. Anything less means the journey consumes most of the stay, which is the most common way people come away feeling Likoma was not worth it.

Not simply another beach stop
The thing that makes Likoma worth the effort is not the beach, which is lovely but is not better than the mainland shore. It is that the island is a destination with its own history rather than a stretch of coast with lodges on it.
St Peter's Cathedral is the clearest expression of that. A building of that scale on a small lake island is genuinely startling, and it anchors a community with a distinct identity. The island is small enough to walk and busy enough to be interesting.

Getting there is the itinerary decision
Two routes: fly, or take a boat. The Ilala ferry is the historic option and part of the island's romance in a good deal of travel writing. There are also direct boat transfers between Nkhata Bay and Likoma, and the airstrip has been upgraded.
We are not publishing ferry schedules or fares. We do not currently hold evidence for either that is recent enough to plan against, and a stale ferry timetable is worse than no timetable — it produces confident decisions built on nothing.
What we will say, from experience arranging it, is this: do not make the ferry time-critical at both ends of the same trip. Use it as the outbound or the scenic leg and keep a faster option for the return where timing matters. Build a buffer night at the island end.

Who this is actually for
Likoma rewards travellers with time and a tolerance for logistics that do not run to the minute. If the phrase "buffer night" makes you uneasy, the southern lake will serve you better and there is no shame in that.
It is also a strong choice for a second Malawi trip, or for the back half of a long one, when the main circuit is already done and the appeal is going somewhere most visitors do not reach.

Likoma is the clearest example in Malawi of a place that is genuinely worth it for the right traveller and genuinely not worth it for the wrong one. We would rather talk someone out of it than have them spend a third of their trip in transit.
The mistake is almost always the same: adding Likoma to an itinerary that was already full, and treating the transfer as a detail. It is not a detail. It is the structural decision the rest of the route has to bend around.
