Likoma Island sits in the northern section of Lake Malawi, closer to Mozambique than to the Malawian mainland. The MV Ilala serves it on a published schedule that changes seasonally and is subject to operational delays and route alterations.
Why it matters
Missing the ferry on a remote island with limited accommodation and no road access creates a logistics problem that cannot be resolved quickly. The island's isolation is both the point and the risk.
How to use it
Use the ferry as the outbound or scenic leg. Charter as the return where timing is critical. Verify the schedule within 48 hours of departure. Build a buffer night on the island. Do not make the ferry time-critical on both ends of the same trip.

Likoma is worth the effort, but it requires a different kind of planning than a standard lake itinerary. Treat the island as a standalone chapter, not a side trip.
