Liwonde National Park covers about 548 km² in southern Malawi with the Shire River along its western edge. African Parks has managed it in partnership with Malawi's Department of National Parks and Wildlife since 2015.
Go to Liwonde for the boat safari. Drifting the Shire at first light past hippo pods and elephant on the bank is genuinely different from a game drive, not a softer version of one, and it is the thing Malawi does better than its neighbours in the safari register.
Give it one night rather than three if what you want is volume of big cats. Cheetah, lion, black rhino and wild dog were all reintroduced between 2017 and 2021 and the populations are real, but they are recovering populations in a 548 km² park. Two to three nights is the honest allocation for most routes.

The river is the point
Most Malawi safari marketing leads with the same wildlife list as everywhere else in southern Africa. Liwonde's actual claim is narrower and more defensible: the Shire concentrates game on a single predictable line, and you can travel that line by boat.
Hippo and crocodile are near-certain, elephant on the bank are common in the dry months, and the birding is the strongest in the country — fish eagle throughout, and Pel's fishing owl for anyone prepared to look properly.
Walking safaris and vehicle drives both operate. If you have time for two activities, our view is that a boat outing and one drive beats two drives.

Three separate charges, not one price
A guided game drive or boat safari is priced per person for the activity alone. Liwonde Safari Camp currently publishes US$30; NYASA paid US$50 per person with a different operator in April 2026. Both figures are real, and the spread is an operator choice rather than a park rate.
Park entry is separate, at US$30 for international visitors, US$15 for residents and SADC citizens and US$4 for Malawi citizens. It is charged only on a day you actually enter, and only once even if you do two activities that day. That single rule changes the cost of a full day here more than any operator choice does.
Accommodation is a third, entirely separate line, and it is the one that actually determines what your Liwonde nights cost.

Where you might stay
Camps and lodges associated with the park include Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp, Kuthengo Camp, Chimwala and Chinguni House, spanning self-catering tented camping to riverside lodges with all-inclusive rates.

Getting there, and when
Liwonde is a straightforward road trip from Lilongwe and closer still from Blantyre and Zomba. Note for self-drivers: Lilongwe to Liwonde and back clears the 200 km daily allowance on a standard rental in one day.
The dry months concentrate game on the river and make the boat safari at its most reliable. The green season brings better birding and thinner crowds, with animals dispersing away from the water once they no longer need it.

The mistakes we see most
Booking one night. It buys a single activity and a lot of driving.
Splitting activities across two days, paying two entry fees instead of one for no gain.
Comparing a US$30 boat outing to a US$400 all-inclusive night as though they were competing numbers. Most confusing Malawi quotes come from exactly that.
Expecting predators on demand. They are here and worth knowing about. They are not the reason to choose Liwonde over the river.
A park restocked
African Parks reintroduced four major species between 2017 and 2021. Presence is not the same as a sighting, and this chronology is the honest basis for what to expect.

Liwonde is priced on its own terms, not as a package, and what varies is the operator rather than the park. A current camp rate of US$30 and our April receipt at US$50 are both real, which is why we publish the band rather than a single confident number.

Last researched September 2026. Malawi Tourism states 220 square miles, about 580 km²; 548 km² is consistent across African Parks material and is the figure used here. African Parks manages Liwonde alongside Mangochi Forest Reserve as a landscape of roughly 900 km², which is where larger figures usually originate.
