LIWONDE
Why boat safaris matter here
The Shire River is where Liwonde reveals itself. A jeep safari here is useful, but incomplete — the early morning and late afternoon boat hours are when the park earns its reputation.

What is happening
The Shire River is the central artery of Liwonde National Park. At dawn, game congregates along the banks to drink and hippos return from nocturnal grazing. At dusk, the same window opens again in lower light.
Why it matters
A jeep safari in Liwonde covers the park's interior, but the river is where the density of sightings — and the quality of the experience — tends to be highest. The boat positions guests differently: closer, quieter and at eye level with the water.
How to use it
Request the boat safari specifically when booking. Confirm which guide operates the river. Arrive at camp the evening before to ensure the 05:30 departure is not rushed. Two nights minimum.
NYASA Recommendation
Liwonde is more than a checkpoint between Blantyre and the lake. Plan at least two nights, take both boat safaris and confirm your guide's river experience before arrival.
