Majete Wildlife Reserve is a roughly 700 km² protected area in the Lower Shire Valley, about 70 kilometres and an hour and a half from Blantyre. African Parks took on its rehabilitation and management in partnership with the Malawi government in 2003, when poaching had emptied it of most large mammals.
It is the only reserve in Malawi holding all of the Big Five. Lion were reintroduced in August 2012, completing the set after black rhino and elephant, and mammal populations now exceed eleven thousand. For a traveller wanting a conventional Big Five safari in Malawi, this is the only address.
Choose Majete over Liwonde when you want classic bush game viewing and the Big Five, when your route runs through Blantyre or the southern highlands, and when two nights of vehicle safari is what you are after. Choose Liwonde when you want the boat safari on the Shire, which Majete cannot match as a signature experience.

Majete or Liwonde
This is the decision most southern-circuit travellers actually face, and the honest answer is that they do different things.
Liwonde's signature is the Shire River and the boat safari on it, which is the most distinctive wildlife experience in Malawi and something most of southern Africa cannot offer. Its predator populations are real but recovering, and it is a smaller park.
Majete's signature is completeness. It is the only place in Malawi where a Big Five sighting list is a realistic ambition, the terrain is classic bush rather than riverine, and the restoration story is genuinely remarkable. It sits closer to Blantyre, Zomba and Mulanje, which makes it the natural safari component of a southern highlands route.
If you have the days for both, do both — they are complementary rather than redundant, and the drive between them is manageable. If you have days for one, let your route geography decide: Blantyre and the highlands point to Majete, the lake and Lilongwe point to Liwonde.

What a stay looks like
Vehicle safaris are the core, with walking safaris and boat activity on the Shire also available. Two nights is the sensible minimum: it buys four game activities and makes the drive worthwhile.
Accommodation ranges from the reserve's own camps to a private-concession lodge. Reserve-operated options sit at the accessible end and there are lodges near the entrance as well as inside.

Why the conservation story is not just marketing
It is easy to be sceptical about restoration narratives in travel writing. The Majete numbers are checkable: over 2,500 animals reintroduced across fourteen species, mammal populations above eleven thousand, and a sustained record of no rhino or elephant poaching over more than a decade.
That record is also why park fees and lodge rates here are not simply a price. A meaningful share of what visitors pay funds the protection that makes the reserve viable.

Over 2,500 animals have been reintroduced since 2003. The chronology is the reason Majete is worth understanding rather than just visiting.

Majete is the strongest argument Malawi has that conservation funding works, and it is worth going for that reason even if the sightings are ordinary on the day.
We would not, however, sell it as the better park. It is the better park for a particular route and a particular traveller. Anyone telling you Majete beats Liwonde outright has not asked where else you are going.
