Zomba Plateau rises to 2,087 metres above the town of Zomba in Malawi's Shire Highlands, and dominates the skyline for miles. Unlike Mulanje, you can drive up it, which makes it the most accessible highland experience in the country.
The plateau carries pine plantations with remnant patches of native montane forest and miombo on the south-western slopes, and is crossed by a network of paths suited to walks of anything from an hour to a full day. Views run into the Shire Valley on one side and toward Zomba town and Mulanje on the other.
Two nights is right for most travellers. It works as a cool break between southern safari and the lake, and as a genuine slow-travel stop for anyone who wants to walk. Skip it on a compressed itinerary — it is a pleasure rather than a headline.

What you actually do here
Walk. The plateau is crossed with paths suited to short strolls and full-day routes alike, and local guides are available through the Zomba Tour Guides Association — worth using, both for route-finding and because it puts money into the local economy.
Beyond walking there are viewpoints, waterfalls and forest. It is a place for two unhurried days rather than a checklist.

On the temperature
You will see specific claims about how much cooler the plateau is than the valley below — we have used one ourselves in the past. We could not substantiate it against any source we would stand behind, so we have taken it down.
What is defensible is the physics: the plateau stands around 1,200 metres above the surrounding lowlands, and air temperature falls reliably with elevation. Expect it to be noticeably cooler than Zomba town or the Shire Valley, and genuinely cold at night in June and July. Bring a layer.

Where it fits
Zomba sits conveniently between Blantyre, Majete, Liwonde and Mulanje, which makes it easy to slot into a southern route without a detour. That convenience is most of its argument.
Used well, it is the pause between a safari and the lake — the point where the pace drops before the trip ends. Used badly, it is a night in a hotel you drove past on the way to somewhere else.

Zomba is the stop people cut first when an itinerary gets tight, and usually they are right to. It is a genuine pleasure and it is not the reason anyone comes to Malawi.
Where it earns its place is on a longer southern route, as the gear change between a safari and the lake. If your trip has no gear change in it, that is a bigger problem than which plateau you skipped.
