What is happening
Zomba Plateau rises sharply above Zomba town — Malawi's former colonial capital. At altitude, the climate is distinctly different from the surrounding lowlands: cooler in the evening, misty in the morning and significantly wetter during the green season.
Why it matters
Visitors moving from a lake itinerary directly to the highlands — or vice versa — often underestimate the temperature shift. The plateau also changes the pace: it is quieter, slower and more reflective than the lake or the parks.
How to use it
Treat the plateau as a change of register, not just a change of location. Pack a layer regardless of season. Plan access routes carefully during the green season when roads to the summit can become impassable after rain.
NYASA Recommendation
Zomba Plateau is one of the least-visited and most underestimated parts of Malawi. If the itinerary allows, the altitude, the quiet and the light are worth a full day at minimum.
