Lilongwe is a spread-out city with significant variation in infrastructure quality between districts. Long-stay visitors and NGO workers concentrate in a few neighbourhoods where power, water and logistics are more predictable.
Why it matters
Short-stay visitors often pass through Lilongwe without engaging with it, treating it as a transit point. This misses the infrastructure, restaurants and informal networks that make longer stays functional — and the neighbourhoods that give the city its actual character.
How to use it
If spending more than four days in Lilongwe, identify which areas have consistent power and the best-stocked markets before choosing accommodation. Proximity to Area 43 or Old Town matters more than a hotel's brand.
