Two Malawi driver quotes can look ten dollars apart and be two hundred apart once fuel, distance and overnights are settled. These are the terms worth pinning down — with us or with anyone.
What a driver actually is
A private driver in Malawi is usually driver and vehicle together, charged per day. NYASA’s own record for this is around US$140 per day, from April 2026 — that is what we paid, not a rate we are quoting you, and it is old enough that we re-confirm it before any arrangement rather than treating it as current.
What a driver buys beyond transport is local judgement: someone who knows which road is actually passable this month, what time a reserve gate really opens, and how long a transfer takes rather than how long the map says.
One thing we do not publish
The public figure read US$0.25–0.30/km while the internal record read ~US$25–30/km — a hundredfold discrepancy that no external source can settle, because the two readings describe different things. Published rental excess-mileage rates sit at US$0.38–0.73/km, which suggests the lower figure was the right order of magnitude but not necessarily the right charge.
Until we can say exactly what that charge was for, it is not on this site. We would rather tell you the line exists and is worth asking about than publish a plausible-looking number you might budget against.
Six things to settle before you agree

Included, reimbursed at cost, or yours to pay at the pump. This is the single biggest variable between two apparently similar quotes.
Whether there is an included daily distance and what applies beyond it. Get the basis in writing, not just a number.
On multi-day routes the driver needs accommodation and meals. Some rates include it, some add it per night. Ask which.
Whether you pay for the drive to reach you and the drive home afterwards. On a one-way route ending far from base, this is material.
A saloon on tar and a 4x4 on reserve tracks are different products at different rates. Match it to the actual route.

A transfer is a single journey, priced A to B. A driver is time: the vehicle and the person stay with you for the day or the route, wait while you are in the park, and adjust when the plan changes.
For airport to lodge, buy a transfer. For a multi-stop route where timing will move, buy a driver. Paying day rates for what is really three transfers is the most common way people overspend here; buying transfers for what is really a touring route is the most common way they end up stranded.

Malawi looks small and drives large. Road surface, livestock, villages and the ferry crossings all mean average speeds well below what a map suggests, and a day with two long transfers in it is usually a day with nothing else in it.
We build routes that arrive before dark, because official advice against night driving is the one piece of Malawi safety guidance that most changes outcomes. That constraint is why our day plans sometimes look less ambitious than they could be.

The current day rate with the operator for your dates, in writing. What it includes on fuel and distance. Whether driver accommodation is inside the rate or on top. The vehicle class against your actual route. And that the driver is available for the whole window, not just the first leg.
Requesting a driver takes no payment and confirms nothing. You get a reply from a person within 24 hours; where a rate needs confirming with the operator, that reply tells you so and says how long it will take.
