Since 24 February 2026, whether you can collect a Malawi visa at the airport depends on which category your nationality sits in. Here is what the official sources say, where two of them disagree, and how to find out where you stand.

The short answer
Malawi operates a two-category entry system. Nationals of Category Two countries are eligible to obtain a visa on arrival at designated ports of entry. Nationals of Category One countries must obtain a visa or prior authorisation before departure and cannot rely on getting one at the border. This has applied since a public notice issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services took effect on 24 February 2026.
Eligibility for a visa on arrival is not the same as being visa exempt. Category Two travellers still need a visa; they are simply allowed to obtain it when they land. The immigration authority encourages them to apply online in advance anyway, to reduce processing at the port of entry. The category lists change. Malawi's immigration authority is the only body that can tell you which one applies to your passport, and entry is never guaranteed by holding a visa. Check the official portal before you book flights.
On the fee: a single-entry Malawi eVisa charged US$50 when NYASA paid for one through the official portal in September 2026 — US$50 — which matches the amount published in the official e-Visa FAQ. A separate official government page, the Department of Immigration fee schedule, lists US$75 for the same visa. Check the amount on the payment screen before you confirm.

We completed a real single-entry application on the Malawi Department of Immigration’s official e-Visa portal and were charged US$50. That figure matches the fee published in the portal’s own FAQ.
The Department of Immigration also maintains a separate visa fees page, and that page currently lists US$75 for a single-entry visa. We are not treating either government page as wrong — we are recording that they differ, and that the amount actually charged at the point of payment was the lower one.
Confirm the total on the payment screen before you submit. If you are budgeting well ahead, budget US$75 and be pleased.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services issued a public notice placing every nationality into one of two categories. Category Two nationals became eligible for a visa on arrival at all designated ports of entry, and airlines were advised that they may be boarded for Malawi without a visa already in hand. Category One nationals must arrange a visa or prior authorisation before they travel.
That second half is the part worth reading twice. If your nationality is in Category One and you arrive expecting to sort it out at the airport, the airline may not board you in the first place.

We are not going to publish a nationality table. The category lists change, a stale table is worse than no table, and the only body that can tell you your status is the authority that decides it.
The official e-Visa portal carries the current notice and an eligibility check. Use it against the passport you will actually travel on — not the country you live in, and not the passport you used last time.

Two official Malawi government pages publish different single-entry fees. The e-Visa portal FAQ says US$50. The Department of Immigration fee schedule says US$75. Both are live official properties and neither appears to be out of date.
We settled it the only way that actually settles anything: we paid for one. The charge was US$50. That does not make the US$75 page an error — it may cover a route or category we did not use — but it does mean the figure a traveller meets at checkout, on the standard online single-entry application, was the lower one.
The other categories agree across both sources. Transit US$50. Multiple entry, six months, US$150. Multiple entry, twelve months, US$250.
We could have picked whichever figure suited and produced a cleaner-looking page. What matters operationally is simple: the amount charged in the official application is the amount you pay, so check it there before entering card details, and budget for the higher figure if you want a margin.

Applications go through the official e-Visa portal, and the portal states that payment is made online by card. Three working days, as stated in the official e-Visa FAQ. A stated processing time is not a guarantee.
Read that as a stated processing time rather than a guarantee. Three working days across a weekend or a Malawian public holiday is longer than it sounds, and our operational advice is to apply at least two weeks out. There is no advantage to applying late and no refund for a trip you cannot board.
Some older pages on the immigration estate still say applications must always be made online. The February 2026 notice is newer and more specific, and it is the one that governs visa on arrival for Category Two nationals. Where the two appear to conflict, the dated notice is the one to follow — and applying online in advance satisfies both readings, which is part of why we recommend it.

Apply online before you fly, whichever category you are in. It is the only approach that is correct under both the current notice and the older guidance, it removes the airline boarding question entirely, and it means the fee discrepancy is resolved on screen before you commit to anything.
Check your category against the passport you are travelling on, and check it again if your plans move by more than a few weeks. Keep the confirmation reachable offline. And treat nothing here as a guarantee of entry: holding a valid visa has never obliged any country to admit anyone, and Malawi states as much itself.
